Why do I do what I do? That is a good question! It started because I wanted to be able to tie my shoe without my belly getting in the way and I wanted to look good in my bathing suit. I would say it was for aesthetics initially. It slowly morphed into being more about my long-term well being. I want to be around for a while. I want to be able to play with my grandkids and travel and be in physically good shape to do all the things I want to do in the future. Plus, I am really not too keen on the idea of hospitals or surgeries to fix my heart or cancer or anything that could have been avoided by my choices today.
But it has turned into much more than that. What really drives me now is a little bit of frustration. You see we have some problems in the good old USA. Look around next time you are in a grocery store or at a restaurant.
“The majority of the American public is overweight or obese and yet undernourished in several key nutrients.” – USDA 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans
Why has this happened? Well, there many reasons. Some people say we are making poor choices. Well, that may be true, but when your two choices (for the most part) are ‘bad’ and ‘really bad’ how can you call that a choice? Either way you are making a bad choice!
“The American environment is conducive to this epidemic, presenting temptation to the populace in the form of tasty, energy-dense, micronutrient-poor foods and beverages.” – USDA 2010 Dietary Guidelines for Americans
What is this statement saying? Basically, they are saying we have easy access to cheap food that is not healthy for us. They are right! I would say I eat fairly healthy now. The one thing I struggle with, is that there is very little food I would consider buying in my neighborhood chain grocery store. The organic section of my local chain store is probably smaller (floor space wise) than that of the soda section. Seriously, think about that! That huge store and they only things I would consider buying take up less space than that of 1 single item, soda!
My concern is that the cards are stacked against the American people. No one wants to make a bad choice on purpose. No one wants to be unhealthy. We are just mislead by marketing or just are not aware. The last time we had education on nutrition was probably in elementary school (that was a long time ago), and things have changed since then. We can’t win the nutrition game without some education or food companies providing a lot less bad options and way more good ones (who knows how long that will take, if ever).
That is why I do what I do, to spread the word, to help people learn and change their own habits, so that they can help their family and friends do the same. We cannot wait for the government to fix this and we cannot wait for food companies to fix this. The only way we can win, is if we take action and take responsibility for ourselves and help our friends, family and loved ones do the same.
