the “mr. grinch” – green smoothie

March 17, 2011 by tk

Happy St. Patrick’s Day!   I thought today would be the perfect day to share with you another one of my green smoothies.   Here is what I had for my mid-morning snack this very morning, a green smoothie called, the “mr. grinch”.  I nicknamed it “mr. grinch”, because it’s a mean one.  I have 2 of these every day (except the weekends, I usually try to get at least 1 per day on the weekends).   This is NOT a green smoothie you will want to try your first time out (beginners should start with “the kermit”).   You will need to work yourself up to something like this.  Seriously, do not try this at home kids!

stuff you will need:
1 ½ cup water
1 scoop protein (we now use Sunwarrior) (You can use kefir, greek yogurt, hemp seed or almond milk instead of protein if you like)
½  banana (peeled)
½ orange (peeled)
1 small pieces of pineapple
1 tomato
1 carrot
1 stalk of celery
10 sprigs parsley
6  dandelion greens
⅔ cup broccoli
1 leaf – red chard
1 leaf – collard greens
1 leaf – kale
2-3 cups spinach
1 small slice of ginger root
1 small piece cinnamon
1 tbs udo’s oil 3 6 9 (optional)
1 cup ice

what to do with the stuff:

  • place all stuff  in your vita-mixer
  • turn on (blend until smooth)

This makes a very large pitcher. It probably turns out to be somewhere around 400 calories, mainly due to the protein and oil.  By removing the oil you can cut it by 120 calories.  This is very filling and probably covers most of your required vegetable and fruit for the day.  I drink 2 of these bad boys a day, mainly because they make me feel so good!

Experiment with some green smoothies in your diet and see if you don’t start feeling better too!

the kermit

January 12, 2011 by tk

This was one of my original green smoothies, this picture is from my camera phone (that is why it is so blurry) on October 9th, 2008. The recipe has changed over the years but this is a good starter. I do not do the milk any more and would replace with water or soy milk, but otherwise this is a great basic green smoothie. We will call this one “The Basic” or maybe “The Kermit”….hmmm, either way it is a great one to start with.

1 cup water (or unsweetened soy milk)
1 scoop vanilla protein powder (we like Sunwarrior)
2 stalks of celery
1 carrot
1 tomato
2 cups spinach
some broccoli
some cucumber
some cinnamon (couple shakes)
some ice

dump it all in your Vita-Mix and blend baby blend!
