There are a lot of battles to choose from in the world today. Â Sometimes I think it is better not to know. Â But when it relates to the health of our kids (and us), there are some things we need to be made aware of…and quickly.
As you probably already know, my personal battle was with obesity and then turned into a focus on overall health.  What I am quickly learning is that the reason I was obese was not fully because I was lazy and was a pig. There were other forces working against me. Namely – our food system.
Our food system has changed in many ways over the years and we are seeing the results of those changes in the rise of health issues  in our society today.  I am not saying that the food system is 100% to blame, but I am saying it sure makes it significantly more difficult for people to be healthy.
I consider my personal lifestyle a healthy one now. But I do have to say, the food system and society did not make it easy for me to get there. In the beginning, it took some additional effort on my part.  Now, I have it down and know what needs to be done. So, from that aspect, it is easy, natural and very pleasurable. My main frustration with the food system is how it is making us fat (and its ramifications on our health).  But there is another side of the food system battle … the engineering of food and how this is making our kids (and us) sick.
I came across this TED video by Robyn O’Brien, who did an awesome job explaining some of these issues in simple terms.   Robyn O’Brien is “A Texas native raised on Twinkies and PoBoys, Robyn O’Brien is a critically-acclaimed author, researcher and mother of four who has leveraged her experience as a food industry analyst to uncover how one of life’s most basic activities – eating – has become a risk to our health. Her work has been praised by Ted Turner, Dr. Oz, Erin Brockovich and seen in the New York Times, on CNN, the Today Show and other media.”
If you have kids, you need to watch this video. If you don’t have kids, you should watch this video.  There is some very important and shocking information in this video – some was even new to me.  If you really listen to what she is saying (and you may have to watch it a couple of times to get it all), you will think twice about what you feed your kids.  It is 20 min, but if you save your children from having cancer, autism, obesity, food allergies… in their lifetime, it will be the best 20 min you could spend!
Sometimes we use our kids as a reason for why we eat poorly – out of ‘convenience’ or because ‘my kids are finicky’. We reward them with ‘treats’ and somehow we catch ourselves thinking that “They’d better enjoy eating junk now while they can because when they get older like me, they won’t be able to.” Well, that’s not how it works and childhood obesity and diseases are making that very clear.
Please take the time to understand what we’re doing to our kids. If I had known this information when my children were smaller, I could have ensured a healthier life for them. I guess I should consider us lucky – we’re only dealing with acne and lupus at our house. What about you?

It is so great that there are people out there like Robyn fighting this fight! Â But this problem is not going to be solved overnight.
The good news is you CAN solve this problem in your family overnight!  The solution is simple – eat real, whole organic foods. Yes, it takes a little more effort than popping  a waffle in the toaster or opening a tube of blue yogurt, but that sounds a heck of a lot better than having your child suffer from any of the above mentioned problems, which will cause you a lot more work and money later.
If you can’t make your own health motivation enough for changing your lifestyle and you’re using your kids as the excuse for why you can’t do better, then it’s time for some change. The ramifications down the road will be significant and one day, you’ll wonder why you didn’t do something sooner.
So please, watch this video, share it with other parents that you know and start making small changes in what you are feeding your family today! If I can help you, please let me know.
